What are the benefits of wisdom teeth removal?

Wisdom teeth can cause many oral health issues. Here are some of the benefits of their removal, what the procedure involves and how it can help you feel your best.

What are wisdom teeth?

Between ages 17 and 25, most people develop a third set of molars, called wisdom teeth. While they can be valuable if they are healthy, they are often impacted or misaligned and will require removal.

What problems can wisdom teeth cause?

If there isn't enough room in your mouth for wisdom teeth or they emerge in the wrong position, they can become crowded or impacted. They can't be cleaned while below your gum line and, if crowded, they become hard to properly clean.

They can also cause:

  • Infection
  • Difficulty with proper mouth function
  • Bad breath
  • Facial swelling
  • In emergencies: chest pain, lightheadedness, shortness of breath

What are the benefits of having problematic wisdom teeth removed?

Having your wisdom teeth removed can offer many benefits, including:

  • Alleviating pain
  • Preventing infection
  • Preventing damage to teeth
  • Eliminating bad breath
  • Improving oral health
  • Circumventing further dental procedures

How will I feel better after having my wisdom teeth removed?

There are many benefits to removing your wisdom teeth. Having this procedure performed will save you from pain down the road caused by impacted teeth and more.

You can also save time and money by avoiding complications caused by wisdom teeth, circumventing dental and orthodontic work in the years to come.

What does the procedure involve?

Step 1: Anesthetic

Local anesthetic will be used to numb the tooth and surrounding area. If anxious, you may also be provided with a sedative to help you relax.

Step 2: Removing the Tooth

The tooth will either be removed from beneath your gum with a small incision, broken and removed in pieces, or rocked back and forth to loosen it before actually being removed. Generally, the removal of wisdom teeth take about 20 minutes.

What about recovery from wisdom teeth removal?

You should be able to return home the same day as your procedure. Stitches may take 7 to 10 days to dissolve and gauze may be applied to the extraction site.

You'll be asked to apply pressure to it by biting your jaws for an hour or so to allow a clot to form and encourage healing. In the day after the procedure, you should avoid hot liquids, physical activity, smoking or drinking alcohol and rinsing your mouth.
