Braces vs. Clear Braces vs. Clear Aligners: Which is the Right Choice for Me?

Depending on your needs and style preferences, you have different options for types of braces that will work for you. Here, we compare traditional braces, clear braces and clear aligners.

Clear Braces vs. Traditional Braces vs. Clear Aligners

If you investigate orthodontic treatment options, you will likely come across two different choices of treatment options: braces and clear aligners. Clear braces, however, are a middle ground between the two.

Here, we will compare these three treatment options in order to help you decide which is right for you. Each have pros and cons and your dentist can help you make your choice.

Traditional Braces

Braces are the option most are familiar with. They are also generally the most visible when worn, although advancements in technology means that wires and brackets have shrunk over the years.

Traditional braces are the option for people who need complex orthodontic issues resolves. You can also choose to use colourful or just tooth-coloured elastic bands with them.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are removable appliances that straighten your teeth like braces, but do so without wires or brackets. They are made from clear plastic, making them nearly invisible to casual observers when worn.

Since clear aligners are removable, you may keep eating the food you love without special dietary requirements (unlike braces). Since braces are fixed, you need to avoid crunchy or sticky foods while undergoing treatment

You should only drink water with aligners in your mouth. Otherwise, remove them when you drink or eat. Before returning them to your mouth, you'll have to brush and floss to avoid bacteria and food getting stuck inside.

Not everybody is a candidate for clear aligners, however, and for those who are not, clear braces can be a good compromise.

Clear Braces

Clear braces are a kind of ceramic braces which work just like traditional braces, using wires and brackets to move teeth into new positions. They are less noticeable than metal braces, though.

Their ceramic brackets match the colour of your teeth, letting them blend into your smile more than metal braces. Sometimes the wires can be applied to match your smile's colour too.

How should I care for clear braces and metal braces?

Whether metal or clear, you need to have excellent oral hygiene while undergoing orthodontic treatment. SInce food and plaque can get caught in the wires and brackets, brushing and flossing become more important than ever.

Which foods should I avoid?

With both clear and traditional braces, resist eating sticking and sweet foods like popcorn, caramel and most candy. They can damage your braces.

Do clear braces stain?

Clear braces can become easily stained, so you should watch what kinds of food or drink you consume. Avoid dark-coloured food and drink like soda or blueberries.

What about cost?

Metal braces are often the most affordable options, while clear aligners are just above the average cost of braces. Ceramic braces are the mid-range between these two options. But the price will always depend on your orthodontic problem

How long will I have to wear braces?

If you aren't sure whether you have the self-discipline for clear aligners, non-removable braces may be a better choice.

Metal and clear braces are comparable when it comes to the duration of treatment. Patients will generally wear these appliances from 1 to 3 years.
