The Prince Edward Island (PEI) Provincial Dental Care Program is designed to provide low-income families with subsidized basic dental services.

The PEI Provincial Dental Care Program covers limited dental examinations, diagnostics, and preventive services, as well as certain dental appliances, restorations, and surgical procedures. It also covers some prosthetics as well as some adjunctive services.

Individuals who qualify for the Provincial Dental Care Program may receive covered dental treatments from either:

Eligibility

To be eligible for coverage, patients must:

Those who have dental insurance must use their dental insurance coverage first when receiving dental services.

Patients can apply to the program by completing the application form and returning it to Dental Health Services.

The benefits card will be mailed to the address associated with the patient’s PEI Health Card. This card must be shown at every dental visit.

It may take three to four weeks for patients to receive their eligibility card. Dental appointments should only be scheduled after the benefits card has been received and the patient has been notified of eligibility and coverage details. The Provincial Dental Care Program will not reimburse patients for services received before eligibility has been determined.

Key Details

Patients will need to contact the dental clinic directly to determine whether they participate in the program. If they do, the patient can discuss the potential costs associated with the visit with the dental team and schedule their appointment.

Patients must reapply to the program each year. Eligibility Cards expire annually on June 30 and should be renewed before this date to avoid any gaps in coverage.

FAQs

What should I do if I don't receive my eligibility card within the estimated three to four weeks?

If you haven’t received your eligibility card in three to four weeks or if you require dental services prior to receiving your card, contact the Provincial Dental Care Program office to determine if your application has been processed and to verify the address on file with your PEI Health Card.

Are there any costs that I need to pay out of pocket for the dental services covered by the program?

The amount of coverage that you have and the amount you need to pay depends on your eligibility circumstances. In some cases, you will also be responsible for laboratory fees associated with your treatment. This information will be outlined in your benefits package and should be verified with your dentist.
